Director supports many different bitmap, audio, and video formats. Built into the language are a suite of very powerful 2D bitmap manipulation tools, referred to as "imaging Lingo". This subset of Lingo allows authors to perform advanced operations such as to bitblit.

While a vast majority of users relied on the timeline for the development of their work, a number of expert developers began creating stunning projects, especially games, that took advantage of the speed of imaging Lingo. Unfortunately, Macromedia sometimes needed to change the programming interface for Xtras from version to version of Director, requiring many third-party members to either update their plug-ins or drop support of Director after a few revisions.

Over time, many original third-party developers moved on to other opportunities rather than incur the cost of editing their code over and over.
